REF - New Hours

As you all know, we are now open M-Th 8-8 and Fridays 8-3. To accomodate the extra hours in statistic keeping, we are now using the Reference statistics sheet on the reference desk instead of the calendar. Each form holds 3 days of stats. Continue to use the calendar to track class and online orientations and textbook readability studies.

In the evenings, please total the stats at the end of the day. It helps if the totals are in red ink but not required!!!!

REF - Useful Websites by Subject

It's a new semester and a new chance to find dead links in the Useful Websites by Subject webpage! I have printed out a copy of the page and placed it in the yellow reference folder. Please work on this as you have time.

If you run across sites that should be included, add them and send an email to the rest of us so we can get to know the new source.

If the link is to another library page of links like the Government page that I found this morning, please print out that page and check those links as well.

REF - New Books are Out

Cris has changed over the New Books shelf. We haven't been getting a preview of the new books for a while now so I want to encourage the reference staff to keep up with the new titles we are adding. You can do this by visiting the New Book shelf or by visiting the new books online. Here is a link to the New Book search.

ALL - Copy & Pasting from Yahoo Mail

Over the last week Diana and I have worked with several students having trouble doing a copy/paste from their Yahoo mail account into Word. I found a solution.

At the bottom of the Yahoo email window there is a link Save Message Text.
Click on the link and select Open from the dialog box.
This opens the text in a Notepad file.
Now the student can copy/paste the text into Word and fix the formatting.

REF - ALL Gavilan Library Website Updates

I've added a few things to the Library website.

Our handouts are now available on the Library home page. They are only in pdf format for now but I will be adding an html copy soon. You can find these under the heading Find Articles and the link is Library Handouts

The Search Engines and Subject Directory page has been updated to include Google Scholar, Windows Academic Live and Scirus academic search engines. Please go and take a look. They are a new sort of beasty...

Access Science will return Wednesday November 1st. Yeah!

ALL - Recovered Library Cards

How does everyone feel about taking library cards that we have found here in the library and instead of holding on to them, deleting them from the patrons account and replacing it with their social like we used to do? This way we can use the library card for a new patron. When they come back to the library and say they lost their card we will just give them a new one. There will be no need to charge them because we re-used the card. - Brandon

All -- Handouts in the Library

Please Note:

There has been some confusion about where handouts that aren't from the library should be displayed. We have labeled the wood handout shelf inside the Library entry gates for Library Information Handouts. Community and Other Campus related handouts will be displayed in the black turning shelf which is being relocated to the west side of the circulation desk, outside the Library entry gates.

Encyclopedia Britannica online

A student called to report that she couldn't access Britannica from home. I called the vendor's tech support number and was told that somehow the link was not going to the correct address. It has been corrected. If a student reports that they can't access Britannica off campus, have them go to http://search.eb.com/remove_cookie and that will take out the cookie preventing them from viewing the site.

ALL - student postings

Absolutely no postings on the doors, except library hours, and also keep the counters clean. I also noticed some fliers have the ASB approval stamp, and others don't.

I would say no job and no lodging/room postings, keep student postings at a minimum and check with the head librarian.

All: Library PCs Reminder

I just wanted to remind everyone that the computers in the library and in the computer place are set up with a security program that resets the computer each time it is powered off.

The importance of this is...
Never tell a student to save anything on the computer (desktop or C drive) that they intend to last past the computer rebooting. Also keep in mind that rebooting the computer is not just at the end of the day. Computers get hung up all the time and the only way to get them back is to reboot them. Always tell a student to save to a portable format such as a floppy disk or a USB drive.

Proquest Flier

Librarians,
I've revised the Proquest flier because simple keyword searches produce too many results in Proquest. Students need to search using topics (main theme of this article is...) and possibly combine a topic with keywords to fine tune their search.

A copy is on the reference desk for your review and suggestions. Monday I am taking it to Reprographics unless I get some revision suggestions.

all -- wireless access in the library

I wanted to let everyone know about our wireless access in the library. We do have a hub but it is only useable by Gavilan issued computers (from the SRC or EOPS) or if your laptop has been authorized by MIS. If this still sounds muddled just let me know and I'll try to clarify things. So the upshot is... we have wireless access - sort of.

all -- Library Location "Pamphlet"

Susan pointed out that we still have a location Pamphlet listed in the catalog. I will work with the Technical Services mavens and get any items we still have assigned to a location we actually use and then get the location out of the catalog. Thanks Susan for finding this!!
