Accreditation Visit

In preparation for the accreditation visit next week, you may want to review our self study. The relevant section deals with Standard IIC, Student Learning Programs and Services.

The accreditation team will have with them the Guide to Evaluating Institutions, which includes the standards and a set of critical questions to answer about each. These questions provide a useful tool for the team to make sure each standard is appropriately addressed.  The critical questions for Standard IIC are on pages 31-37.

Questions or concerns? Please contact me! I want to know!

LIB736 / PSYC Students

If a student adds Dr. Oler's Psyc class after the class was set up they need to be added manually.

If one of Dr. Oler's students comes in asking why they cannot access LIB736, get their name and G00 number and section or day/time they meet and send me an email with the information. I will verify that they are in the class and get them added to the class.

Thanks
Dana

Changes To The Library Homepage

Please take a look at the new homepage. The look is not permanent because we will be reworking the entire thing soon. We started with adding a tabbed box featuring Gavilan OneSearch. Please dive in and put OneSearch through its paces!

Also let me know if there is anything you think we need to add to the box.

DietAnalysisPlus FAQ

Good Morning:
Periodically we get questions about the DietAnalysis project for AH11. Here are some of the most common questions...

1) Where is the software available?
Students can purchase online access/subscription access and can use it anywhere they can get online. Students can also access it for free here in the library on several laptops that still run Windows XP.

2) How can I save reports as a pdf?
You don't actually save the documents as a pdf, you 'print' them to a virtual printer (primopdf) which creates the pdf file. If a student wants a physical printout they print the file to the laptop printer as usual.

3) How do I use Primopdf to create the pdf files?
Here is a link to a basic set of instructions.

4) How do I upload my reports to my instructor?
Most of the time if we get asked this it is because the student is trying to upload the files in the wrong place. Assignment 1 is listed in the class shell (iLearn) in two different ways.

The first listing is the word document with the assignment details. Students cannot upload files into a word document. This is the word document icon.

The second listing is the actual 'iLearn' assignment where the student can upload the files. Here is the assignment icon.

Please let me know if I have missed a question that comes up for this program, or if you have any questions.

New Student Computers

Yeah! The new student computers have arrived. There are a few hitches with the software at this point. I have told the librarians about relevant passwords for clearing locked library cards.

Please let Diana or me know if you have problems with Cybraryn.

Ref Staff -- Chat Reference

Those of us that work the reference desk already know that we have put up a new, more stable version of chat reference. In connection with getting it up and running I spoke with the Distance Ed folks and they have deployed a widget in iLearn. So we will now be able to field questions from the Ask a Librarian page and from within iLearn. It will not look different on our end.

I created accounts for Dana, Gloria, Peggy and Dolores to use whenever we are working reference. I will write up the basic instructions and put them in the reference desk information manual. I will also distribute it via email. Anyone else that would like to take a look at the new reference chat program, please let me know. Remember, if you have an account and intend to use it you will be expected to answer reference questions! :)

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Welcome Back ... Welcome to Fall 2011

This is my first post for Fall 2011. I wanted to update everyone about Office 2007 v Office 2010. The college is now teaching Office 2010. I have tested our computers with Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010 documents. They open fine and they have the same extension as the 2007 versions. So for us and for students the differences should be transparent!

Thanks to Jane Maringer in the High Tech Center/ DRC for helping us test this.

If you have any questions, please let me know

eBook news

As you may already know, our ebook collections will be hosted by Ebsco starting on or about July 1, 2011.

There will be a couple of changes due to Ebsco buying NetLibrary. One difference is our students will be access the ebooks through the EbscoHost interface instead of the stand alone NetLibrary ebook interface. They should also still have access through our catalog records. An even bigger difference is the single user restriction appears to be gone. I just opened the same ebook on two different computers.

Here is a link if to the preview of the service. Oncampus link to preview of eBooks in EbscoHost

Please email me if you would like the link to access this preview from off campus.

Note that eBooks are an additional 'database' in EbscoHost. As such, currently you must use the Choose Databases link to search that database. Do we want to make it one of the default databases after the change in July?

'Saving' a file to a pdf

Happy Mardi Gras (a few days late)

For those of us that work with students at the student computers, we often get asked to help a student with some aspect of using the Dietary Analysis program (on computers LIB008-LIB010). The primary question we get is how to 'save' their reports to a pdf document. Here are the basic steps.
Note: a pdf is an electronic printout so the trick is that we are printing the document to a pdf.
1. Student completes the data input and chooses to print the reports.
2. Select the PrimoPDF printer.
3. When the interactive window comes up, leave the SaveAs selection to Ask When Creating PDF
4. Click on the Create PDF button
4. The student will be prompted to enter the filename and point at the drive or folder in which to save the document, click on the Save button. This creates the file and saves it to the drive and folder you selected.
5. The file is now ready to upload to the instructor.

Heads Up for student Gavilan login changes and Spring 2011 registration

Pre-priority registration for Spring 2011 will begin in a few days on November 18. (Don't ask me what pre-priority means since I always thought priority meant first!) The schedule of classes is available online right now but will not be available in print until 11/24/10 and after.

AND

Students will be given access to MyGav as of the end of the week. When they want to log into Banner they will go through MyGav. For those of you that haven't used MyGav much you might want to get familiar with it to help students with logging in and such. Of course the login user and password will be the same as their familiar Banner information.

Please let me know if you have any questions!
